Healthy Snacks for the Long Haul | West Coast Enterprises

Just like your rig needs quality fuel, your body needs the proper fuel to keep going through the many miles ahead of you. And just like you shouldn’t fill truck’s tank up with sugar, you shouldn’t just dump into your body whatever cheap sugar and carbs are set out on the shelves near the register at the truck stop.

Keeping your energy up and your mind sharp as you roll down the highway takes good nutrition, including foods that give you a boost and keep you full. Fortunately, you can also find these at most truck stops, though you’ll save money if you buy them at a grocery store or, even better, a warehouse club and portion them up as needed.

Great Foods for Truckers

  • Beef Jerky. This is a trucker standard, so it’s probably not necessary to include it here, but we just want to point out the value of this high-energy snack. Of course, some of it is loaded with fat and salt, so it’s best to check the nutrition labels to find one that’s conservative on those.

  • Hard-boiled Eggs. If you’re a team driver, you may want to hold off on the hard-boiled eggs, since the smell can be a bit overpowering, particularly in an enclosed space. However, if you’re riding alone or have an understanding partner, hard-boiled eggs are loaded with protein that can keep you full longer, as well as other important nutrients.

  • Protein Bars. It’s right there in the name, but in case it isn’t clear, the value here is the protein that keeps you full longer. That’s good not just because it means you save money on snacks, but also because it means you’re taking in fewer calories while staying sated.

  • Nuts. Similar concept here, nuts are loaded with protein and healthy fats—and they may help lower your cholesterol. From pistachios to almonds to cashews, they’re also delicious.

  • Trail Mix. For those who crave sugar and salt and still want to indulge those cravings while eating healthy, trail mix can be the perfect compromise. Toss in some salted nuts and chocolate pieces or yogurt-covered raisins for your sweet tooth. You can get it pre-made, but it’s easy enough to make your own so you get exactly what you want.

  • Cheese. Cheese is protein-packed, filling and delicious. Plus, it’s simple; the best option here for truckers is the childhood favorite string cheese.

  • Produce. This one is great in combination with some of the high-protein foods on this list. We know fruits and vegetables are crucial to a healthy diet, and with largely sedentary lifestyles, they’re especially important foods for truckers. However, they aren’t always filling and, because many contain natural sugars and/or are mostly water, they often don’t stick around long.
