How to Clean Your Truck’s Cab | West Coast Enterprises
We’re all working a little harder to ensure the spaces we spend time in are clean these days, and for drivers that includes their cabs.
If you’re trying to ensure you’re as safe as possible in the place where you spend most of your time, here’s some information to help you on your mission.
What to Clean
A good start is anything you touch, which includes door handles, the steering wheel, your keys, the CB, the shifter and seat belt apparatus. When you go in a hotel, truck stop or rest area, you touch a lot of surfaces and can bring germs from them back to your rig.
Additionally, when you have a visit from maintenance, a DOT checker or maybe an overly friendly security guard, you’ll want to thoroughly clean everything they touch.
Beyond the little stuff, you’ll want to regularly clean your floor mats or footwells, because think of all the germs your shoes get into. You may not think that’s important because you don’t touch the floor, but how often do you drop your keys, paperwork or something else down there and then pick it up without thinking of cleaning your hands? Exactly.
How to Clean
First stop: Let’s talk about what we really mean when we talk about cleaning. We’re using that term generically to mean cleaning and disinfecting, which is really the step that gets rid of the bacteria and viruses that may have invaded your home away from home.
Disinfecting means using an agent such as bleach or an approved disinfecting compound, while cleaning technically is mainly about getting rid of the dust and dirt.
The CDC has great direction for disinfecting.
Basically, you need to clean everything first, then disinfect thoroughly. While you may think you’ve got a handle on how to use a cleaning wipe or other disinfecting product, there are some specifics to using a disinfectant from the EPA you’ll want to ensure you follow.
What You’ll Need
Obviously this will mean keeping a few extra things in your cab. Among the things you’ll probably want to have around:
- A bucket, soap and a rag to help with that initial clean
- Quarters and detergent for laundry (but you already knew that)
- Disinfecting chemicals and/or wipes
- Disposable gloves
