Practicing Sun Safety as a Truck Driver | West Coast Enterprises
While summer is behind us for now, as truckers well know, there are many parts of the country that stay quite warm all year long—and even for those that do not, sun safety is something that is just as important during cold weather as it is during hot weather!
While many drivers may not consider sun damage as a hazard of the job, it certainly is. Even mild sun exposure can cause damage to the skin if it occurs regularly, and truck cabs have large enough windows to let in plenty of UV rays.
Drivers should be especially careful with their left arms, as this is often where the brunt of the sun absorption can be. If you would like to be sure you are practicing good sun safety, check out our top tips below:
How to Practice Sun Safety as a Truck Driver
Make sunscreen part of your daily routine. Sunscreen is no longer only for beach days! Finding a daily sunscreen lotion that you apply each morning can keep your skin hydrated and protected as you drive. Experts recommend purchasing full spectrum sunscreen that is at least SPF 30 so you can be sure you receive adequate protection.
Wear clothes designed for protection. Sun shirts are often popular for hikers and fishers, but they can be a great option for truck drivers, too. These shirts are often quite lightweight but feature built-in SPF protection, so you can stay cool and protected when you are logging long hours through the day.
Invest in good sunglasses. Sunglasses are not merely a convenience—they are also good for sun protection for your sensitive eyes. Sunglasses that block both UVA and UVB rays can keep your eyes protected for years to come, and make driving more comfortable, too.
Be extra careful at peak sun hours. The sun does not shine at the same intensity all day long, so if you are driving during peak hours, it is wise to be extra cautious. The sun does the most damage when it is directly overhead, so adding extra sunscreen or layers during afternoon drives can be helpful.
