Tips for Keeping Your Truck Cab Cool in the Summer | West Coast Enterprises
We have reached peak summer weather, and depending on where in the country you are driving, that can mean temperatures upward of 100 degrees Fahrenheit on a regular basis. Despite powerful air conditioning, truck cabs can become akin to greenhouses in these types of conditions—quickly becoming miserable to drive in for hours on end!
In addition to being uncomfortable, driving in a hot cab can also become dangerous. An enclosed vehicle’s temperature can rise nearly 30 degrees in just 20 minutes, and if your air conditioning goes out or can’t keep up, things can quickly become dangerous.
Fortunately, with some careful planning, you can find ways to keep your cab cooler and reduce the heat that builds up throughout the day. Check out some of our favorite tips for this below!
Ways to Cool Off Your Truck Cab in the Summer Heat
Start by keeping yourself cool. In addition to the ample amounts of sunlight that can get into your cab and raise the temperature, your body heat can also contribute to that. Make sure you are dressed in cool fabrics that are lightly colored, are staying hydrated and are keeping your air conditioning in good working order.
Use sunshades any time you stop. Reflective sunshades are not just for long breaks! Any time you stop, put a barrier in each window to stop the sun from peeking in. This will help keep things cooler by not allowing the sun’s rays to penetrate the cab, so your air conditioning doesn’t have to work as hard when you get back behind the wheel.
Roll your windows down when taking breaks. If you know it is not going to rain, rolling your windows down while taking breaks is a good plan. This will keep the air circulating through the cab, preventing it from becoming hot and stale.
Make yourself a cooling bandana. You can find lots of cooling bandanas and wraps on the market, but you can just as easily make one yourself for those long haul drives. A few ice cubes wrapped in a bandana and placed on the back of the neck can do wonders for lowering your body temperature and making the heat bearable.
